• Boletes
unknown - Mystery Boletes
Many boletes are hard to ID in the field!
• Boletus
edulis - Cep, Porcini, Penny Bun
The prized Cep. Stunning! I reckon you could smash a window if you threw this hard enough, it's so monumentally huge. You've got to beat the slugs to it if you want to eat them though!
• Caloboletus
radicans - Rooting Bolete
Huge, blue-staning, yellow-pored boletes that pop up in big groups, almost any time of year in my experience! A fine artistic opportunity.
• Leccinum
scabrum - Birch Bollete
These are often very hard to miss! Quite readily identified by their "scabby" stipes.
• Pseudoboletus
parasiticus - Parasitic Bolete
Now this is a cool one - these fungi are parasites on earthballs! I've never seen anything like it before or since.
• Suillellus
queleti - Deceiving Bolete
So called deceiving because no two ever look the same! These pop up in almost any shape or size. Their flesh and pores very quickly turn a dramatic, deep prussian-blue when damaged.
• Suillus
luteus - Slippery Jack
In the right places, you'll be struggling to take a step without standing on some of these things. They pop up almost everywhere, and in high numbers!
• Xerocomellus
chrysenteron - Red-Cracking Bolete
A very moody looking bolete! I think they're very aesthetic.
